Geocache Cake Construction

This cake was the perfect example of taking someone's passion and celebrating it in cake!

For those of you that don't know what Geocaching is here's a brief description as I understand it.  It involves the search for hidden items, kind of like a treasure hunt, but you don't take the treasure you leave it and add to it for others to find.  It is an international phenomenon that can vary from simply searching in your neighbourhood with a compass or as tech savy as using GPS systems and locating things in other countries.

For this Father's birthday we created a unique woodland hiding spot for the geocache box that was loaded with trinkets for him to find!

The cake was constructed of 4 stacked 8 inch round chocolate sponge cakes.  A cake board was used between the 2nd and 3rd layer and dowelled to support the upper layers.  A small square cake was made and cut to form the roots of the tree.

We carved out a niche in the tree base as the hiding spot for the gumpaste geocache box.

The cake was then enitrely covered in chocolate buttercream and textureized with a cake comb.  Green buttercream covered the board as the woodland floor.

A buttercream ivy trails up and over the stump.  We made ahead by several days the compass, box, pencil and trinkets for inside the box.  Hidden in there is a yellow rubber ducky, a marbled bouncy ball and a ghost key chain made from fondant.

A few airbrushed fall leaves and the cap mushrooms gave the cake the perfect woodland touch!

This family loves trekking through the woods looking for Geocache sites and found a great way to celebrate this together!  It was great fun to work on and probably one of my favorite cakes!

I am VERY excited to see MY cake on your site! I am KENAS! The cake was even better in person, and all of my geocaching friends still talk about the cake to this day! My wife's concept, and your execution were second to none! I'm glad to hear that it was one of your favourite cakes, and look forward to using you again in the future!
